There are some useful presets to help you get a louder final output. Then in Logic apply some of the mastering template channel strip settings to the Output channel strip. I'd suggest mixing your project so the output never passes -6dB and the bouncing to a 24 bit aiff/wave file. The last two processes are very important in making your creations within Logic sound great on any stereo system outside of Logic. Recording : Arrangement : Mixing : Mastering The process of Digital music creation usually involves: Logic's Audio system is very high quality and when you create something in Logic you need to apply some processes to bounce the file to a format used for CD or other uses. You want them not clipping (going in to the red) but having a healthy level just beneath 0dB. The Logic developers have unequivocally confirmed to me that what David says here is correct. The important thing here is to check the Output channels level meters. (Obviously I am not talking about the distortion plug-ins.) You cannot create overload distortion anywhere else in Logic. When overload distortion is created in Logic, it is created: on the output bus (and in that case you can get rid of it by lowering the master output fader), or at the input of a plug-in (and in that case you can get rid of it by inserting a 'Gain' plug-in just before the plug-in and lowering its gain). In my tests, I have slammed those at +96dBFS and lowered my master by the same amount, and showed with phase inversion tests that the two resulting bounced files were bit identical. You couldn't create clipping on individual channels even if you tried (and I have tried!). There is no such thing as "normal headroom" in the digital world. In fact, have a listen to the track and constructively criticise it for me when you get the chance.

This is what lead me to this question in the first place. I did the whole track clipping detection thing and it was fine but a couple of the tracks in the mix were certainly clipping when I bounced from Logic, although I limited the master. The last track I finished in Logic (my first ever Logic track) was mastered in Waveburner. The same goes for using a limiter on a channel that keeps clipping turning the offending channel down gets rid of the clipping but of course is sacrifices the volume and screws the mix up! I always finish up a tune by putting all the faders down and then mixing, so that's fine.the clipping thing is always an issue though and if I compress too much then I get pumping or lose dynamics! I guess I shouldn't appy any effects as I go but this helps me to write as I can get the whole soundscape happening as I go. Try listening to the differences between using the "hidden" clipping feature of the Logic compressor, clipping the channel, clipping via destructive gain, and clipping via a dedicated clipping plug-in.įirst of all, thanks for all the replies/links.īottom line for me is that I want to be able to hear all the sounds rather than having to worry about seeing that the channel is clipping and sorting it out again and again just so I don't have to worry about reapplying compression etc. Apart from destroying transients (againi a subjective matter) clipping properties vary according to the method or plug-in. However, accumulated clipping may very well lead to listening fatigue over a prolonged period of time. The reverse is also true: you can lower your channel faders and make up on the master fader without affecting the sound.Īs for only using your ears, a valid argument.

#Waveburner bounce clipping 32 bit

While Logic operates in 32 bit float that only means that you are able to exceed the normal headroom and for instance lower the master fader without affecting sound quality.

Remember that some plug-ins will not report internal clipping, too. Hi Alan The important thing here is to check the Output channels level meters. Some people may dispute this advice but a friend of mine writes the courseware books for Apple Logic and personally assured me that this mixing technic is absolutely fine because Logic uses 32bit floating point audio.Ĭlipping the channel is clipping the channel, and deteriorates the sound quality from a puristic point of view. As long as the master is not clipping your doing fine.
